DESCRIPTION: Photo essay about Low Kwai Lan, who had a renal bone disease that destroyed her spine. This layout used an experimental technique of scanning a glass sheet that was randomly cut with a blade and then painted with a brown water color tint. The effect created echoed the frustration, anger and regret that Kwai Lan went through after she became a victim of kidney failure at the age of 18.

This particular issue of the Beacon Herald along with three other newsletters won the NKF Singapore a Wilmer Shields Award for Excellence in Communications in 2001 for Newsletter Design.

This newsletter cover design was created for the Beacon Herald Newsletter, a quarterly newsletter that is sent out to donors of the National Kidney Foundation, Singapore.

The cover image if of Jeffrey, one of the NKF’s kidney patients. From national water polo player to a half-blind, crippled kidney failure victim, Jeff’s tragic fate tore his life apart. Still he bravely fought on until his last breath. His courage still remains an inspiration to many who are still battling on.

This particular issue along with three other newsletters won the NKF Singapore a Wilmer Shields Award for Excellence in Communications in 2001 for Newsletter Design.

On the cover design, Jeremy, a CMF ambassador, still manages to sing his heart out in spite of his condition that makes his bones brittle and easily susceptible to fractures.

Prepaid Stamp Designs for the National Kidney Foundation, Singapore

PROJECT: Full Color Pre-paid Stamp Designs

This series of full color prepaid stamps was designed for the Singapore National Kidney Foundation to reflect the work of some its life-saving programs. It also created history by being the first full color pre-paid stamps in Singapore.

Stamp Design #: “The Girl with Butterflies”: The girl with butterflies expresses a sense of liberation about how the Children’s Medical Fund presents a chance for chronically ill children to grow up and find happiness.

Stamp Design #2: “Boy Hugging Bear”: The boy hugging the bear expresses a sense of joy and how the Children’s Medical Fund presents a brighter future for chronically ill children.

Stamp Design #3: “Girl with the Heart”: The girl hugging the heart symbolizes organ donation being “the gift of life.” This stamp was designed to reflect the work of the National Kidney Foundation, Singapore’s Organ Donation Department.

Stamp Design #4: “Health Screening”: This stamp was designed for the Prevention Program of the National Kidney Foundation, Singapore and reflects health screening, one of the program’s key strategies in preventing kidney failure in Singapore.

Stamp Design #5: “Medical Breakthroughs”: The image of medical research represents how the NKF continually endeavors to bring the latest medical breakthroughs to enhance its programs and services.
